MMP-9 is a protein encoded by the MMP9 gene which is approximately 78,4 kDa. MMP-9 is secreted into the extracellular space. It is involved in the integrin pathway, matrix metalloproteinases, degradation of the extracellular matrix and the innate immune system. It is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase and is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodelling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. MMP-9 is expressed in the blood, bone marrow, lung, intestine and lymph nodes. Mutations in the MMP9 gene may result in intervertebral disc disease. STJ96722 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of MMP-9 protein.
