mGluR5 is a protein encoded by the GRM5 gene which is approximately 132,4 kDa. mGluR5 is localised to the cell membrane. It is involved in signalling by GPCR, long-term potentiation and peptide ligand-binding receptors. This protein falls under the G-protein coupled receptor 3 protein family. It is a metabatropic glutamate receptor, whose signalling activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. It may be involved in the regulation of neural network activity and synaptic plasticity. mGluR5 is expressed in the blood and cells of the nervous system. Mutations in the GRM5 gene may result in granulomatous angiitis and x-linked hereditary ataxia. STJ94110 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of mGluR5 protein.
